b. 1995

Janet Cardiff, b. 1957. George Bures Miller, b. 1960. Believing that sound has the unique ability to “bypass your intellect…[to] go inside of you in a way that nothing else can,” Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller incorporate music, voices, quotidian rumblings, and jarring sounds to create multisensory artworks inspired by history, memory, and dreams. Their outdoor audio installation FOREST (for a thousand years…), 2012, is located along the Woodland Trail. The work imagines what a forest might have heard over the course of a millennium, using Ambisonics technology and an array of speakers to create a “dome” of sound. FOREST creates an immersive experience, forging sound into a discreet space.
