Jackson Pollock

b. Cody, WY, 1912
d. Springs, NY, 1956

Jackson Pollock was an American painter and part of the Abstract Expressionist movement in New York. Throughout his career, he experimented with a range of approaches to drawing and painting. Pollock is best known for developing the technique of “drip painting,” in which he placed canvases directly on the floor and controlled the flow of paint by dripping it from above. The process achieved a singular approach to materials and improvisation and birthed some of the most iconic works of the last century. Number 1, 1952, is a prominent example of Pollock’s drip paintings in Glenstone’s collection.
