Isa Genzken

b. Bad Oldesloe, Germany, 1948

Working with a wide range of media, from sculpture and painting to collage and film, German artist Isa Genzken is known for a radically innovative approach to materials and forms. Challenging the boundaries between art and everyday life, Genzken’s work reflects her keen interest in architecture, urban environments, consumerism, and politics, often combining disparate materials to create complex works that speak to contemporary culture. Hemd/Jacke, 1998, is a work in Glenstone’s collection comprised of 18 shirts and jackets painted and collaged by the artist. Drawn from Genzken’s personal wardrobe, each piece of clothing has been transformed: some splattered with paint, others with shards of broken CDs or trimmed with fur. The work recalls the entrancing energy of dance clubs and urban nightlife while critiquing the relentless cycle of consumer culture and mass production.
