Born in Tokyo, Japan, Hiroshi Sugimoto is a photographer known for his technical prowess with large-format cameras. His subjects range from seascapes that stretch the horizon—barely showing the curvature of the Earth—to movie theaters where the screen is rendered blindingly bright as the duration of an entire film is captured in a single long exposure. Time and transcendence are cornerstones of Sugimoto’s practice; he is consumed by how the camera transcends the controls of chronology, allowing him to capture the sea and sky and all of the light in between.
