Gilbert & George

b. London, United Kingdom , 1967

Gilbert Prousch, b. 1943. George Passmore, b. 1942. The artists known as Gilbert & George first met while students at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London (now Central Saint Martins) in the late 1960s. In 1967, they formalized their collaboration into the concept of “living sculpture,” stating that they did not need to create physical objects but could be the art themselves. The duo merged their lives together as, in their words, “one grand sculpture,” collapsing the boundaries between art and life. Since their first performance when they walked around London with metallic glitter on their hands, they have reflected on the human experience. The pair have been living and working together since 1967 in east London. In April 2023, they opened the Gilbert & George Centre to put on regularly scheduled exhibitions.
