A foundational figure in the development of time-based media art, Gary Hill examines the interplay of language, technology, and perception in his ambitious multimedia projects. Since his early experiments with video and sound in the 1970s, Hill has challenged the limits of media art, often combining and reconfiguring analog and digital technologies in distinctively innovative ways. Among Hill’s best-known works is Tall Ships, 1992, in Glenstone’s collection, an interactive video installation created using custom-built video projectors mounted in a dark corridor. Viewers engage with the work by walking toward any of the ethereal, softly focused images projected onto the walls. Appearing in the image of each projection is a person who walks toward the viewer, meeting face-to-face, standing there until the viewer steps away. Immersing viewers in moments of encounter, Hill explores the intimacy and vulnerability of human interaction through a unique visual experience.
