American artist Ellsworth Kelly frequently revisited shapes and motifs he observed from his lived experience, exploring form, color, line, and space through painting, sculpture, collage, drawing, and photography. At 45 feet high, the commissioned sculpture Untitled, 2005, situated directly across from the Gallery Pond, is among Kelly’s most iconic works. An artist deeply engaged with spatial relations and shadows, Kelly carefully considered the form, material, and placement of this work relative to the surrounding landscape and architecture, studying the path of the sun throughout the day and its resulting reflection patterns. The sculpture’s matte finish is a result of bead blasting the stainless steel surface, which appears to change color throughout the day and seasons, consistent with Kelly’s long-held interest in nature, color, and light.
