American artist Doug Wheeler manipulates light and space to create transformative, monumental installations. Wheeler started as a painter in the 1960s but quickly turned to manufactured light as his primary medium, characterized by his use of neon tubing. Wheeler creates immersive environments that alter how viewers perceive their surroundings, often engulfing viewers in a bath of light. To achieve this, Wheeler eliminates as many grounding elements as possible, excepting light and sound, to transport visitors into spaces where unseen light sources shape the world around them.
