The work of American artist and writer Christopher Myers is rooted in storytelling across cultures. Working in textiles, performance, and sculpture, Myers collaborates with artists from around the world, often pulling apart mythologies and unwritten histories specific to the peoples and places where he works. Among Myers’s best-known artworks are his monumental appliqué tapestries that combine cultural and visual traditions from Africa, Europe, and the Americas. His use of appliqué, a needlework technique in which pieces of fabric in various shapes are sewn to form a larger image, emphasizes the intimate, handmade nature of his practice. Each piece of fabric Myers sews holds its own history—from Nigerian wedding lace to Vietnamese cotton—revealing the records of movement, migration, and exchange that are foundational to the artist’s work.
