Chris Ofili

b. Manchester, United Kingdom, 1968

Chris Ofili came to prominence in the 1990s as part of the Young British Artists, a group notorious for their experimentation with unconventional materials and innovative exhibition methods. His works are layered with a wide range of nontraditional media including resin, beads, glitter, elephant dung, and magazine clippings. Existing in the liminal space between figuration and abstraction, Ofili’s art explores themes of religion, representation, and Black identity—drawing inspiration from mythology and his time in Trinidad, where he has lived since 2005.
