Cecily Brown

b. London, United Kingdom, 1969

British painter Cecily Brown has crafted an oeuvre that straddles the line between figuration and abstraction. Brown’s inspiration is as wide ranging as Jimi Hendrix album covers to Eugène Delacroix’s monumental paintings. Instead of painting directly from these images, Brown repeatedly sketches an artwork or a photograph until she feels she knows it intimately, and then paints it from memory. Though she does not set out to replicate her source imagery, there will often be an anchor—a general composition, a body part, or an object—that alludes to the inspirations behind the dynamic brushstrokes of her work.
