American artist Carol Bove creates monumental sculptures that are assemblages of forms and materials. Bove incorporates common industrial elements like steel, wood, and brass to create base forms, then warps, welds, and crushes them into elegant shapes that evoke lightness and movement. Bove often paints elements of her sculptures with automotive paint, adding pops of vivid color and velvety textures to the otherwise raw material. Her works reference a long tradition of Modernist and Minimalist sculptors. Unlike many of her predecessors, however, Bove’s work is expressionistic and improvisational; she never sketches or plans in advance.
