Known for his abstract works made of blocks, bricks, and metal plates, Carl Andre is an American artist associated with Minimalism. He uses industrial materials such as steel, zinc, and wood to create his sculptures, arranging components in ordered, often mathematical patterns. Andre emphasizes the physical structure of each work and its relationships to the surrounding space. Among the works in Glenstone’s collection is Triskaidek, 1979, a sculpture that takes its title from the Ancient Greek word for the number thirteen. Composed of large rectangular wooden blocks stacked carefully on top of each other, the work consists of thirteen columns that ascend in height from one to thirteen feet tall.
