Cameron Rowland

b. Philadelphia, PA, 1988

Often using a single object or document, Cameron Rowland’s practice points to long, complex histories of racial injustice, economic inequality, and the contradictions that exist within institutions and systems of power. Rowland’s art is built on a foundation of rigorous research and intensive investigation into how objects are produced, how policies are enacted, and the very nature of ownership. Rowland’s works can take the form of an active police radio scanner; furniture produced by prison labor bought at municipal auction; or a framed contractual agreement that notes the purchase of $10,000 in shares of an insurance company that once held policies for slave owners.
