Long captivated by color and its ability to forge emotional connections, American painter Brice Marden rose to prominence following his presentation in 1966 of a series of monochromatic panel paintings rendered in oil and beeswax. Repeated trips to Greece led to a lifelong interest in capturing light, and a curiosity in Chinese calligraphy and philosophy prompted his inquiry into the practice of energetic mark making. Marden was expressive in his paint application, often leaving traces of his hand embedded in the work. The multipaneled Moss Sutra with the Seasons, 2010–2015, which traces the colors the artist associates with spring, summer, fall, and winter, was commissioned by Glenstone. It is the result of five years of work, fusing essential elements of Marden’s practice: color, light, and energy.
