American artist Barbara Kruger works, as she describes, “with pictures and words.” Kruger’s methodology merges techniques from commercial and fine art, combining a signature bold typeface—reminiscent of advertising headlines—with popular images to examine power and gender stereotypes. Kruger is interested in critiquing cultural and political conventions, frequently creating a sense of tension between the literal and figurative by superimposing text onto seemingly unrelated appropriated imagery.
