Andy Warhol

b. Pittsburgh, PA, 1928
d. New York, NY, 1987

American artist, director, producer, and cultural icon Andy Warhol began his career as a commercial artist, incorporating elements of advertising and graphic design into the artwork for which he would eventually become known. Warhol was a central figure in the American Pop art movement. His silk-screened canvases, including Large Flowers, 1964, in Glenstone’s collection, are among the most recognizable images of Pop art. Warhol also worked in a range of other media, producing films, television, performances, and photography. He had a penchant for entrepreneurship and collaboration, creating much of his work with teams of assistants at his infamous New York studio known as the Factory. Warhol’s impresario-like activities made him a bona fide star who blurred the boundaries between mass culture and high art.
