American abstract painter Alfred Jensen was an expert in composition, employing grids of colorful shapes to express an interconnectedness between philosophy, spirituality, and thought systems. Jensen’s work draws influence from his childhood in Guatemala coupled with an interest in color theory, mathematics, and scientific formulas. His paintings frequently reference cultures from around the globe, including numbers from ancient counting systems; symbols from the I Ching (易經) divination text; and Mayan calendars. Although part of the same generation as other notable abstract artists, Jensen did not receive recognition from the art world until the end of his life.
