Al Taylor

b. Springfield, MO, 1948
d. New York, NY, 1999

American artist Al Taylor received formal training as a painter and continued to identify as a one despite building a prolific portfolio of drawings and found object sculptures. He painted and drew imagery ranging from pure abstraction to faithful recreations of items like cans, pipes, wires, and tires. As his practice progressed, Taylor began experimenting with splashes of color or “spills” appearing on his paper along with the of multi-dimensional elements. Taylor’s works continued to evolve, culminating in three-dimensional reliefs inspired by his drawings—an attempt by Taylor to create drawings that could be seen from all angles.
