Akira Kanayama

b. Osaka, Japan, 1924
d. Nara, Japan, 2006

Japanese painter Akira Kanayama was a member of the Japanese postwar Gutai group, a community of artists who rethought ways of making art that predated the development of performance art. Kanayama was especially committed to experimenting with process, becoming known for a method that made use of a remote-controlled toy car, to which he would attach a can of paint then drive across the canvas. Work, 1959, in Glenstone’s collection, was made using this technique. Kanayama’s methodology removed implications of personal expression by creating a painting via mechanical means.
